When should my child first see an orthodontist?

What to Expect at an Invisalign Consultation in San Clemente - GoToBro

Children should generally have their first orthodontic evaluation around age seven. At this age, enough permanent teeth have usually appeared for the orthodontist to identify developing problems with crowding, jaw growth, bite alignment and tooth eruption.

An early appointment does not always mean treatment will begin right away. Many children are simply monitored until the ideal time for braces or another appliance.

Earlier treatment may be recommended for a crossbite, underbite, severe crowding, protruding front teeth or a significant jaw growth issue.

Parents should also consider an evaluation if their child has difficulty chewing, persistent thumb sucking, mouth breathing, early or late loss of baby teeth, or teeth that appear significantly out of position.
